LiteracyCNY Announces Appointment of New Board Members
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — On June 18, the LiteracyCNY Board of Directors appointed five new Board Members:
Mary Katherine Buckley, Audit Manager, Fust Charles Chambers
John Maas, Regional Director NYS, Office of the Attorney General
Caitlin Moriarty, Director of Membership, CenterStateCEO Tech Garden
Crystal Rhode, Marketing Coordinator, C&S Companies
Mike O’Shea, CPA and Tax Principal, Firley Moran
Buckley said, “Last fall I read an article in which I learned that Syracuse was in the top ten of US cities with the highest poverty rate. I was surprised by this statistic and wanted to help in some small way. I was drawn to LiteracyCNY as enhanced literacy can lead to improvements in many facets of a person’s life, including but not limited to their economic standing. Additionally, on a personal level reading has always been an important part of my life.”
O’Shea said, “I wanted to be a part of LiteracyCNY for two reasons. First, I have long known of the work of LiteracyCNY and consider it to be a great organization with an impressive history of helping people in Central New York. Second, I believe strongly in the importance of literacy and education when it comes to addressing the root causes of poverty. Through the work of LiteracyCNY, people learn the tools needed to break the cycle of poverty and, in turn, make a better life for themselves and their families.”
Newly elected Board President Bill Kriesel, Managing Member of Diversified Capital Management LLC, expressed enthusiasm for the new class of Board Members. Kriesel said, “The energy and backgrounds of the new board members will be a great addition to our organization. We have spent the last few years focusing on adding board members from all sectors, including business, government and academia. I think with these new members, our board now has a broad mix of expertise and experience, which will help us accomplish our mission.” Other newly-elected Officers are: Jon Mathews, Syracuse Marriott Downtown Hotel Manager, Vice President; Marlena Daher-Rahman, Syracuse Educational Opportunity Center Director of Community Engagement, Secretary; and Richard Sargent, Esquire, Treasurer.
LiteracyCNY’s mission is to provide adults in Central New York with the literacy tools and skills that they need to be contributing, productive, and engaged members of the community. We do this by advocating for adult education, providing instruction, and partnering with other community based agencies. Improving access to adult literacy addresses inter-generational poverty and makes our community stronger. LiteracyCNY enrolled more than 350 adult students last year and consistently exceeds its NYS Department of Education mandates.
